Fifty Ways to Teach Writing by Maggie Sokolik

This activity requires students to think about voice and tone in writing.
Have students imagine they do not have enough money for books or some other important expense in their daily life. They need to borrow a significant (but not huge) amount of money.
In order to borrow this money, they each write two letters. In the first letter, they should ask a close family member or good friend for a loan. In the second, they should ask a bank or financial institution for the money.
Before they write their letters, discuss what the requirements for each type of letter are: how a personal request is different from a formal request, for example.
After they have written their letters, show some good examples on the projector or in a handout.
